Contact us now!

Your opportunity to discover the famous Chianti wine region of Tuscany, Italy. You’ll learn from experts—the wine makers themselves—in two of the finest wineries the region has to offer and, of course, taste the wine.

A brief history of Chianti Wine…

This fertile land was first settled by the Etruscans over 2500 years ago.

On this tour we will be learning specifically about the Chianti Classico wines. These historical wines are often confused with the well known regular Chianti wines.  The defined region for the Chianti Classico wines runs from the mountainous area around Florence all the way to the south of Siena.

Early in 20th century the Tuscany region began to flourish and expand. Following the Second World War, the European thirst for cheap, easy-drinking wine was satiated at least partly by Chianti. The bad news was, this led to overcropping, the potential for less-than official grape blends and balances and, overall, a decline in quality and respect for the wine. In 1924 there was a meeting  of 33 wine producers in the Chiantishire town of Radda in Chianti. Their purpose was to establish the rules for the production of the Chianti Classico wines as their own separate denomination.

Today, Chianti is famously appreciated as one of the finest the world has to offer. It is fastidiously regulated and, on this tour, you’ll discover more about the meanings of both Denominazione di Origine Controllata (D.O.C.) and Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (D.O.C.G.).

On with the Tour

Our Chianti Classico wine region tour has pick-ups available virtually anywhere in and around Florence or Siena. We know these cities extremely well, so we will come pick you up wherever you choose to stay. We’ll meet you at your accommodation at 9:30am, after your breakfast.

To lubricate the introductions, we like to start the day by popping open a chilled bottle of specially selected Prosecco (not for our driver, of course). We’ll give you a brief run-down of what we’re going to be doing for the day, answer your questions and note any special requests. Please remember, we’re not (within reason) on a rigid schedule so it’s OK to stop when and where you want. Educational it will be, but this is your Chianti Classico wine tour, not a school trip. Let’s go!

Our expert, authorised and fully-licensed Italian driver will take us along the famous Chianti Classico Wine Trail with its breathtaking scenery, panoramic views of vineyards, olive groves and picturesque villages and farms and buildings.

Small, but perfectly formed: Chianti wine tour Winery No. 1

Chianti wine has been produced on this land for generations. We will hear the story told by the wine maker how she and her husband were able to obtain this land from the family.   They now produce four wines: Chianti Classico, a Chianti Riserva, a Chianti Rose and a “SuperTuscan” I.G.T. wine made from a blend of 50% merlot and 50% sangiovese. Of course, after a very brief introduction and tour of the vineyards and cellars, you’ll have the opportunity to partake of a tasting of each of these special Chianti Classico wines.

Your tasting will accompanied by little snacks, or spuntinos, of cheese and salami, freshly baked Italian breads and glorious olive oil from the estate.

On this family farm, you’ll find that nothing goes to waste and the owners also produce jams with fruit and vegetables from their gardens. These tasty products are served with the local Pecorino cheese while we are tasting. They would also make unique gifts or mementos of the Chianti wine region.

Winery, aka Fattoria, Chianti Classico wine tour No. 2

The second Chianti Classico winery estate we’ll visit occupies some 190 acres at the ancient Roman settlement of Radda, in mountains at an altitude of between 1500 and 2000ft above sea level, so it’s quite a climb. Thanks to the area, altitude and the micro-climate it affords, the estate produces Chianti wines including Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione and others.

Here, we’ll tour the vineyards and you’ll discover more than you thought possible about the organic viniculture that goes into producing one of the finest selections of Chianti wines available in the world. Then to the cellars themselves where the Chianti wine is fermented and aged in huge casks.

Oh – you want to know what it tastes like? Well, yes, we thought so. That’s why you’re here. On this exclusive Italy Unfiltered Chianti Classico wine tour, you’ll taste no fewer then six different wines, all made right here on the estate where you stand.

As well as the spectacular Chianti Classico wine, you’ll also be able to sample the sweet, peppery, exquisite organic olive oil of that the farm produces.

This part of the Chianti tour lasts around two full hours and includes a mini wine-tasting course complete with this estate’s expert recommendations on how to open, serve and taste Chianti Classico wines.

A luscious lunch served at the winery, paired with the wine.

As we settle at the lovely wooden farm table for lunch, you’ll know we’ve chosen for you well a winery that prides itself in Tuscan hospitality.

Typically, the food on offer will be traditional Tuscan and not what you’re used to at all from your local Italian restaurant in the USA. You’ll truly taste the amore that goes into the cooking. Many of the vegetables and herbs used to flavor this lovely Tuscan fare, are from their own gardens.

Your wines will be paired with the traditional foods which the staff are happy to explain. Their local knowledge of wine and food is welcomed after all you have come for a taste of Tuscany!

A traditional Tuscan lunch is the main meal of the day, and can take a longer then you may be used to.  We suggest you sit back relax and enjoy the leisurley experience.

To complete the tour, a stop in one of the medieval villages of Chianti:

Panzano, Radda or Castellina

As we’re reasonably close by, and time permitting (up to you), we’ll stop at one of the delightful little towns of Chianti, where for sure you can have great photo opportunities. We can visit a local cafeteria for coffee and gelato and go over our notes to answer any further questions abour wine production or even lifestyle questions about daily life here in Tuscany.

Finally, we’ll take a leisurely ride back to your accommodation as you embrace the beautiful dusk as the sun sets over the land.
