Dit’unto : A Greasy Finger Food Festival

This is the time of the year when we have many food and wine festivals in Tuscany. There is one that we look forward to every year called Dit’unto. This is the 8th annual, and yes, we had to wait two long years due to Covid, for our prized festival to return. It is called the ‘Festival del Mangiar con Le Mani’. Which translates to the Festival of Eating with Your Hands.

There is another traditional interpretation of the term Dit’Unto and it tied to the Tuscan Olive Harvest. In the past families would take their olives to the local mill and anxiously wait approx. 2 hours for the process to be complete. As the vibrant green oil came out of the spigot, the first thing the family would do is carefully put a bit of this precious oil onto a slice of bread. It would be gently spread with a finger, being careful not to spill or waste any oil. The term Dit’Unto literally translates to ‘greasy finger’. Families in the past used to be very frugal and using the finger was a common way to spread the oil.

Villa a Sesta, is located just outside of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Today this medieval hamlet, was transformed into a foodie haven. There were 43 different restaurants participating including 11 Michelin star chefs. We arrived early, purchased our food tickets and off we went to taste our share of some of the best street food you can find in this part of Italy.
